Curriculum

Cottage School and The National Curriculum

The Curriculum at Cottage School is based on The Australian Curriculum, covering the core knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities important for all Australian students.

In addition to this, the Cottage School broadens and deepens children’s educational experiences through regular Environment Days spent out in the urban and rural communities exploring the bush, beaches, exhibitions and performances. These outings extend the children’s understandings of the world and their place in it whilst also encouraging the development of effective thinking skills.

Camp three times a year builds resilience and independence.  We have no canteen. The children bring healthy food to school.  We grow our own vegetables, cook and regularly share lunch together.  Our Garden Market brings families together to share produce and conversation.  Bike days extend the children’s physical capabilities, build skills and awareness of the benefits to the environment and their health.  Our extensive Choosing Program allows the children to develop their curiosity and creativity as they pursue their individual interests.

These activities extend the classroom learning and help educate the whole child.

How the classes are grouped

The Cottage School has approximately 80 students between Kinder and Grade 6. The Kinder group attends full days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 3:00pm.  Prep to Grade 6 children attend from 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday.  The school is organised into small groupings, which combined with a high level of staffing, allows for a flexible education program that addresses individual learning abilities.
